Woes from last night’s late Burger King dinner spilled over into this morning. When I woke up in the rented house in Sparta, North Carolina, my BG was high, 219. But breakfast was awesome.
We drove into town and ate at Backwoods Bean. I got the oatmeal and a breakfast sandwich, either of which would have been enough by itself. (I never skip breakfast, but I don’t eat gigantic ones either.) I took plenty of insulin for all this, and the big coffee mug with it was excellent. One of the classic breakfasts of America.
Despite that flirting with danger, my BG was ok afterwards. The Blue Ridge Parkway was foggy today, as we drove from Sparta, across the Virginia state line, and into that state. Lunch was a car picnic, but I didn’t check beforehand.
In fact, today’s route was fairly short, and we were able to check into our B&B in Cana, VA early in the afternoon. At that time, I was 193.
Turned out I wasn’t as smart as I’d hoped, though: at 6 pm, after an atypical afternoon nap, I was quite low, 42. I had some carbs and stuff, and when I was recovered, we drove through a fierce rain storm (a hurricane was approaching) to the town of Mt. Airy, NC. It’s the home of Andy Griffith, and there was a lively and cute downtown area full of places to eat.
I was hungry and in a good mood, so at the Mexican restaurant we found, I had a big plate full of enchiladas and stuff, plus beer. Heavy carbs, in other words. I took what I hoped (against hope) would be plenty of insulin.
Success! After getting back through the oncoming hurricane to the bed and breakfast in Cana, I was 172 at 1 am. Seemed fine to me. We hit the sack, wondering how the hurricane might affect tomorrow’s drive along the rest of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. And I was wondering if the Mexican carbs would bide their time until I was asleep, then wreak their havoc overnight. What would my BG be in the morning…?
