The good news was that today I had a bunch of cool experiences in and around the far northeastern Norwegian city of Kirkenes, not far from the borders with Finland and Russia. The even better news was that my blood sugars were pretty good all day, none over 200.
It began just under the Mendoza line, at 198. It was just after 8 am, and breakfast was down in the dining hall in Scandic Hotel. Another extravagant and tasty buffet.
I spent the morning walking around the town, despite the rain. I saw the water’s edge, the town square, a Salvation Army store, some back neighborhoods, and the small and attractive church.
After the wet stroll, we got lunch at a local convenience store: hot dog and chips. My BG was 155 before this unhealthy lunch that nevertheless hit the spot.
In the afternoon, I got in the rental car and drove to Kirkenes Airport to watch the planes. It’s a tiny regional airport, and while there were people there waiting for flights, actual planes only arrived and left at distant intervals.
I drove back to the hotel and checked around 3 pm – it was 159. That means I’d done well with the hot dog.
I felt good enough to not bother checking before dinner, which was at a sort of family-style place. We got a pizza and nachos – this sort of thing can be awfully tough to find the right dose for. Usually, I take too little and BG ends up high.
But it had been such a good day so far, I really wanted it to last. So I took a large shot and dove into the food.
Afterwards, a highlight of the trip came: we caught the best Northern Lights of the entire trip, reflecting in the waters of the fjord. Excitement, and the pizza and nachos, luckily proved no problem. At just before midnight I got my final good news of the day: blood sugar was a perfect 91!
