We spent our first full day in Ulcinj, Montenegro, doing exactly what we had planned: nothing. No sightseeing, no quirky restaurants, no nothing. What my sister calls a “slugfest” — sitting around like a slug all day. We just worked on our computers and foraged for simple food from nearby markets.
My BG was not particularly good today — it started out at 249 when I woke up, a result I believe of my worry about Masayo being shiveringly cold last night and my annoyance at the discomfort of the room despite it being the most expensive of the whole trip so far.
Breakfast was scrambled eggs thanks to Masayo, plus Cheerios and coffee. We ate at a small wooden table next to the large sliding glass doors overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Nice; I hoped my Humalog shot would get me back down though.
We worked all morning on our computers, with both heaters pumping as best they could, trying nearly in vain to heat the place. Lunch was around 1 pm, and my BG was still high, at 272.
Lunch was similar to yesterday, this time being soup, crackers, yogurt, and a cut up apple. I took my Humalog and kept working after lunch.
It worked well — I was 138 at 6:30, and Masayo said she’d like to have some pizza or hamburger or something simple like that for dinner. But she wanted to stay in the room, so I walked way down the hill into town to find someone who would sell me takeout pizza.
There was no such place, and the best I could do was a bakery that had some slices of pizza in it. They were large slices, and I bought all four they had at €.50 each. I also got two pastries, one chocolate and one strawberry. Then I trudged back up the hill in the dark, dodging cars and looking at the stars.
We had the pizza, but the crust seemed really dense, and sweet, so I only had a slice and a half, and I took a large shot for it. The potential to be high after this was pretty strong, so I wanted to proactively combat it.
I did all right — two hours later I was 211, much better than it could have been. I took another small Humalog shot, and went to sleep. We have another full day here tomorrow, and only vague plans to go walk around the beach and maybe the old town area.
