Masayo and I took it pretty easy today: we had used up our leg energy yesterday climbing up and down Mount Srđ in Dubrovnik, Croatia, so mostly we stayed in the room, but also walked around Old Town some.
My BGs were pretty high all day — just one of those days. It began with a 242 at 7 am, but I took this as a good sign: I woke up in the middle of my sleep feeling high, and actually got up and turned the lights on just to check it. Usually, in recent times, when a high wakes me up it’s because it’s 350+ or so. If a 242 is bad enough to wake me up, that means my control is pretty good usually. Anyway, I took two units of Humalog and went back to sleep.
Later, breakfast was yet again eggs, ham, muesli, and yogurt. After breakfast we went outside to go to a nearby market, hoping to find fresh figs and/or cashews.
Outside on the main street in Old Town, several long tables were set up and students were selling cookies and muffins. They looked good, and Masayo and I decided to get some for later. But first, to the market.
I had seen a nearby market on Google Maps, and it turned out to be really small, with a few tables. But some of the vendors did have figs; Masayo bought a bag. Nobody had any cashews.
We went back to the cookies table, but they were already taking everything down. In less than ten minutes, we were too late. Oh well.
Back in the room, my BG was 176. A little high, but it would be the lowest reading of the day, as it turns out. Masayo worked on an online project she has while I tried to work out flights and everything for Norway. I used Google Flights, which I’d not used before, but which is great fun and very useful. Masayo cursed the internet; although it works ok on my computer, the signal is too weak for hers.
It took hours, but I finally pieced together an itinerary for Norway that was a great mix of cheap prices and low-hassle travel. No long layovers or multiple flights. (To a point.) We will go to Trondheim for a few days, then to Bodø for a few days, then fly to Atlanta. Hopefully, we will be able to see the Northern Lights in one of both of the towns in Norway.
After this we decided to walk around Old Town, which we still hadn’t really done. We went inside some churches, and wandered around back alleys. ‘Twas quite a thing.
We ended up following a sign that said “COLD DRINKS” through a small doorway in a back alley, and found a place that had some tables set up on a cliff overlooking the sea. It was excellent, and a few people sat talking and having wine or tea.
We sat down, and I got a beer and Masayo peach juice. We enjoyed the warm, sunny skies and the view to the endless sea — and the outside of the city walls towering over us. Despite the sign, my beer wasn’t in fact cold, but no matter. I played with the settings on my camera for fun as we discussed the trip to Norway.
Unfortunately, while here I checked my BG and was 225. And it felt like it: a high that just wants to happen. I took two units of Humalog, but had no food. Insulin, beer, no food, and walking around: didn’t seem smart to me, but it was a lapse in judgment.
We continued around Old Town a little after that, and went back home, relaxing some more. I didn’t feel particularly energetic — must have been the warm beer, the insufficient food, and the two units of Humalog, only one of which I may have needed.
For dinner, Masayo didn’t want to go out, so I went to find something to bring back. I ended up at a grocery store, and I got a can of tuna, some instant soba noodles, and yogurt. One of my famous hodge-podges. Back in the room I prepared it all and we ate. Not perfect, but filling enough. The figs went well with it, anyway. I realized as we started eating that I felt quite low. I didn’t check, I just ate.
And my BG got a little better afterwards: at 11 pm I was 192. Not perfect, but not too terrible. I left it alone, thinking it needed some time to even itself out and end up wherever it wanted to end up. I’d take care of it tomorrow.
It was nice to see the alleys and churches and squares of Old Town, and I am very impressed with myself for finding cheap tickets to Norway and some nice hotels to stay at to end the trip. One more day in Dubrovnik (because I couldn’t find flights I wanted tomorrow) and then we’re off for the Arctic north!
